摘泼剌two zhai then po-la

Pinyin: zhāi pō là

Right hand, compound

Also written: 摘潑刺

The ring finger plucks each of two strings once, then po-la is played on the same two strings, four sounds in all.

How it is played

The ring finger plucks zhai on string two and then string one, and immediately the three fingers play bo and la on strings one and two; the four sounds run as one.

How it sounds

Two single notes lead into a bo-la pair; the rhythm is sparse at first and dense at the end.

In the classical handbooks

摘潑刺也,兩絃先各得一聲,後兩絃同得二聲,共成四聲也。名指摘二絃一絃,加以潑刺兩絃也。

Gist: Zhai po-la: two strings each yield one sound first, then the two strings yield two sounds together, four in all. The ring finger plucks zhai on strings two and one, then po-la on the two strings.
