起rise (component)

Pinyin: qǐ

Terms and marks

A component of compound symbols: the left finger sounds a note as it leaves the string, as in dai qi and qia qi.

How it is played

In jianzipu, qi (“rise”) is mostly a component combined with another character into one action: dai qi and qia qi (carved 搯起) are a left finger leaving the string after a stopped pluck and sounding it as it goes, and tong qi belongs to the same family; fan qi means the harmonic passage begins here. The jianzi is written 己.

In the classical handbooks

起也。如帶起、搯起、同起、泛起之類。

Gist: Qi: as in dai qi, qia qi, tong qi, fan qi and the like.
