荡猱swinging wide vibrato

Pinyin: dàng náo

Vibrato and glides

Swings open at both ends like dang yin, but seeking an ancient, vigorous nao quality.

How it is played

Modelled on dang yin: after the note, swing open loosely with force at both ends, but with the force and width of nao, aiming at an archaic quality; the finger should seem leisurely and free.

How it sounds

Broad, expansive rise and fall with an aged, detached flavor.

In the classical handbooks

若前之蕩吟而兼蒼古,指下自有一種神遊八極、悠悠自如之風韻也。

Gist: Like the preceding dang yin but with added ancient vigor; under the finger there is a spirit roaming the eight extremities, free and at ease.
