从「再作repeat from the mark
Pinyin: cóng zài zuò
Terms and marksGo back to the 「 mark beside the jianzi and play that stretch again.
How it is played
A 「 (a small hooked corner in vertical woodblock editions) is drawn beside the jianzi where the repeat starts; on reaching “from 「, again”, return to the mark and play once more, two passes in all. Unlike a bare zai zuo it specifies the start, which suits repeating half a phrase or a stretch inside a section.
In the classical handbooks
從「再作也。譜字傍用「者,從此「字起,再作一遍,共二遍也。Gist: From 「, again: where 「 is used beside a jianzi in the score, play again from that 「, two passes in all.
Easily confused with
- 再作zài zuò· play againA bare zai zuo marks no start and only says to replay the preceding text.
- 从头再作cóng tóu zài zuò· repeat from the topCong tou zai zuo returns to the head of the section and needs no extra mark.
