绰猱slide up into wide vibrato

Pinyin: chuò náo

Vibrato and glides

Slide up (chuo) to the note, sounding as you go, and pass straight into nao.

How it is played

The left finger slides up from below the position, the slide itself audible, and enters nao at once. The old handbooks ask for a round, bright slide-and-vibrato, never forced.

How it sounds

A slide from below passing into a wide, strong rise and fall; coarse or violent, it turns vulgar.

In the classical handbooks

綽猱者,綽上有聲,必取圓潤溜亮。若粗烈過猛,反多俗聲矣。

Gist: Chuo nao: the upward slide is audible and must be round, smooth and bright. Coarse and overly violent, it produces many vulgar sounds.
